LERU Doctoral Summer School

The aim of the doctoral summer school is to provide doctoral candidates with professional and personal development opportunities. The theme of the summer school is of general professional development interest to doctoral candidates. By creating an international, intercultural and inter­disciplinary environment, the summer school provides a highly stimu­lating learning experience which hopefully is of value to the participants’ future careers.

The following summer schools have been organised:

  • 5-16 July 2010 – Universiteit van Amsterdam and Universiteit Utrecht on the theme Communicating about academic research
  • 17-22 July 2011 – University College London on the theme Essential enterprise skills for early career researchers
  • 8-13 July 2012 – Universitat de Barcelona, theme: Beyond open access: open education, open data, open knowledge
  • 14-18 July 2014 at the University of Helsinki. The theme was “Doing the right things right” – Research integrity in a complex society.
  • 8-13 July 2013 Université Pierre et Marie Curie in Paris. Theme: Development of leadership skills, preparing PhD students for a variety of employment destinations in enterprise, government and academia.
  • 13-17 July 2015 at the University of Oxford on the theme Sharing excellence – The value of knowledge exchange.
  • 10-15 July 2016 at Universiteit Leiden on the theme Data Stewardship for Discovery and Innovation
  • 10-14 July 2017 at University of Zurich on the theme Citizen Science – nexus between research and public engagement
  • 9-13 July 2018 at KU Leuven on the theme The Global Societal Challenges
  • 15-19 July 2019 in Edinburgh on the theme Building Research Capacity and a Collaborative Global Community
  • 8-13 Aug 2021 by Trinity College Dublin on the theme Reasserting the Value of the Expert; The role of Doctoral Research and Researchers in Promoting the Importance of the ‘Expert’ in Europe

The summer schools are composed of lectures and hands-on workshops. Two fairly well advanced doctoral students from each LERU university are invited to participate. Lund University has participated all years by sending two doctoral candidates. The university supports participation by cover the conference fee and supporting travel costs.
